The human body is a wonderful thing. It is carefully designed to allow us to interact with our environment. It is made up of a spine with upper limbs which allow us to manipulate things and lower limbs. This allows us to move the body from one point to another and manipulate objects

The body has over 650 muscles; they can be divided into general functions, the stabilizers and the movers. Some muscle groups hold the joints steady before the other group actually move the joint.
The joints are all designed to move in certain directions and their form depends on their function , for example the shoulder joint is able to move it all directions and so has the most mobility of all joints .
The activities that we do and the postures that we adopt will influence how we load our joints. This in turn will influence the inert and muscular structure around the joints. If these postures are allowed to continue over a long period of time they will eventually change the joint dynamics. This can lead to strains of soft tissue and uneven wear of the joints themselves.
In Bowden Physiotherapy we understand this concept and use it to treat a range of musculoskeletal injuries. Our broad aim is to restore normal movement and so relieve pain and restore function .
Our physiotherapist will assess you on your first visit and discover how we can help you. She will identify the problem area and how it is contributing to the problem. She will then look at how you are moving and how the tissue at fault is influencing your movement . We will then get rid of the pain , improve the movement of the joints at fault and then restore your movement pattern so that you can get back to normal. We also want to get you into a healthy life style. So you can eventually start a regular exercise program which suits your life style and one that you will want to continue.
‘Bridging the gap between injury and a healthy life style’
We have a team approach at Bowden Physiotherapy, we have a physiotherapist who assesses and leads the team . She will diagnose the structure at fault and explain to you how its injured and how it is affecting your movement. During treatment you will meet the physiotherapy assistant and aides who will perform any procedures recommended by the physiotherapist. These will help you to do your exercises easier and make you feel better. In the gym you will meet our personal trainers. These people are trained to look for certain competencies as you move. We spend a lot of time training our staff to understand good movement and how to help you achieve it. We start the exercises with something easy but are very strict on making sure the exercise is done exactly right. Once this is mastered, the difficulty is gradually increased. We also teach good posture and gradually improve your fitness levels.
The average treatment cycle is 6 weeks , we will plan all your appointments in advance as this helps us plan how many patients we can see . If you have any particular times you like, please discuss this with our receptionist . However if you work hard we will finish quicker. Our aim is to get you better as soon as possible with as few appointments as possible.
At the end of your treatment we will make your final appointment with our life style specialist. Her job is to reassess your condition and demonstrate to you your improvement , do a fitness test to highlight your new needs and then discuss your exercise program. She will tweak your home program and then discuss options for continuing exercise which could be a walking program, gym program or even swimming. She can direct you to classes in your area, set you up with gym memberships or places you can walk. She is full of information and will find something that suits your personality and life style.
We hope that you have a positive experience which will allow you to understand more about how your body work and how to maintain it in its optimum condition. our staff are knowledgeable and approachable and if they don’t know the answer then they know how to find out.
